What are the big issues facing the world today? 'Energy independence' is a politically motivated effort. Global warming is a survival effort. Add to this the crises of air and water pollution, waste disposal, environmental destruction, and water shortage and we have a view of the state of the real world in 2011.
If we consider the problem of global warming alone, then we will find that building every new building around the world as Net Zero from today onward would not put a dent in the warming trend let alone reverse the damage already done. Therefore solutions we need must be much larger, on many fronts, and also address water, waste, and existing environmental destruction.

This website was founded to develop concepts for the Metropolis Magazine's 2011 Next Generation Design Competition. This past years theme was "Net Zero" - or more specifically a 'Zero Environmental Impact' renovation of an existing GSA building in Los Angeles. We are excited that a group of our compatriots in the DC office just won with a robust entry that included everything but the kitchen sink. Publication soon following.

In our competition work we began by RESTATING THE PROBLEM, then researched POSSIBLE SOLUTIONS that would address the problem as we see it rather than as an arbitrary goal.
